5 African lions escaped from Taronga Zoo
The five lions escaped from Taronga Zoo in Sydney, Australia last month. The zoo was in lockdown for more than 10 minutes after the lions escaped from their enclosure. It was a big breakaway and a huge emergency, but no one was injured.
The zoo’s executive director said the incident was significant. They are still trying to figure out how the lions escaped.
A video was released by the zoo announcing that five lions had escaped from the lion exhibit. The video showed four lion cubs and an adult lion pawing at the fence.
One of the lions escaped through a hole in the fence. This is not the first time the zoo has had an animal escape. However, this was the biggest breakaway.
A Bengal tiger escaped from Taronga Zoo in 1946
Taronga Zoo has been operating from its harbourside site in Mosman, Sydney since 1916. The zoo has a total of over 5,000 animals under its care. There are 350 species in its custody.
The zoo has only experienced two escapes. A two-year-old Bengal tiger escaped from the zoo in 1946 and a young female orangutan escaped from the ape house in 1972.
The zoo is known to have a “code one” emergency in effect when a dangerous animal is found to have escaped from the premises. This type of emergency involves the risk of human death, and requires an immediate response by the authorities.
A ‘Code One’ emergency is typically triggered when a great ape, such as a lion or ape, has escaped from the zoo. They are dexterous animals, and are capable of causing serious harm to humans.
